 Beginning in spring 2012, the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR™) will replace the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). The STAAR program at grades 3–8 will assess the same subjects and grades that are currently assessed on TAKS. At high school, however, grade-specific assessments will be replaced with 12 end-of-course (EOC) assessments: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English I, English II, English III, World Geography, World History and U.S. History.
 
A)  The Commissioner of Education released the performance standards students must achieve to pass or excel on the STAAR end-of-course tests. These passing standards will be phased in. Level II passing standards will be a four-year, two-step process. Level III performance on English III reading and writing and Algebra II only will be a two-year phase-in. B)  The Texas Education Agency (TEA) recently announced they will delay by one year the requirement for a student’s score on a STAAR End-of-Course exam to count as 15 percent of the student’s final course grade. Click here to read TEA notice. This postponement of the TEA rules is reflected in a new brochure which can be viewed by clicking the Lubbock ISD STAAR Info. button below. This spring, End-of-Course exams will be given to all 9th-grade students and to all 8th-grade students taking Algebra I. Please direct questions to your school counselor or principal.

STAAR vs. TAKS -
  • STAAR is a more rigorous testing program.
  • It emphasizes "readiness" standards, which are the knowledge and skills that are considered most important for success in the grade or course subject and for college and career.
  • STAAR will contain more test questions at most grades than TAKS assessments.
  • The high school assessments will move from grade-based tests to course-based exams.
  • For the first time, the state's assessments will have a time limit. Students will have four hours to complete each exam.

Sample Test Questions - STAAR is a secure test, so it is not available for review before it is given. By law, the test will be publicly released every three years. However, the Texas Education Agency has released sample questions, which give the public a sense of what to expect on the new tests. Click button for more information.
